Potsdamer Platz

The bold plan to create a city center from scratch was completed after ten years of construction. Potsdamer Platz was never an open space like a piazza, it was more of a huge intersection, a traffic hub of such density that here even the first traffic light in Europe has been installed. Old photos show the metropolis of the twenties, neon signs, an entertainment area with large hotels and amusements. What has emerged is to build on this time: a giant shopping center (arcade), classy hotels and apartments, a casino and the musical theater, cinemas, restaurants, bars and nightclubs - including underground car parks, railway and road tunnels. Here you can find the from the Italian architect Renzo Piano-designed debis-Haus. The glass Sony Center with the floating canopy (by Helmut Jahn) on the Plaza is one of the highlights of the new capital of architecture. On the northern edge of the square, the investor Beisheim built the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Berlin's newest Nobel Chicago Art Deco style.
