In June 1999 the German Federal Parliament decided to built the "Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe". As early as 1988 the journalist Lea Rosh, proposed the construction of a monument. After two years of construction, it was officially opened on 10th May 2005. At almost 19,000 square meters 2711 stelae have been installed, as envisaged in the draft by the New York architect Peter Eisenman.
The wavy field of pillars is thought-provoking with its abstract form. The box, located under the "Information Center" in an exhibition documenting the persecution and extermination of European Jews.
